Daniel Carroll (1730-1796) Partly-printed Document Signed, "Danl Carroll ", one page, 4.25" x 1.5", Washington, no date given. Carroll was a member of the prominent Maryland political family that included Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll of Carrolton and John Carroll, the first Catholic Bishop in the United States. Daniel Carroll was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and served in the First Congress of the United States. He was later appointed one of three commissioners to survey the District of Columbia and served as one of the City's Chief Administrators. A ticket for the Washington City Canal Lottery, bearing the number 14485. The ticket bears the notice: "THIS TICKET will entitle the Possessor to such Prize as may be drawn to its Number in Lottery No. 1. for cutting the CANAL, through the CITY of WASHINGTON, to the EASTERN-BRANCH HARBOUR." For many years, much of Washington was a swamp, crisscrossed with canals. Indeed at this time, much of the Washington Mall was under water. This particular canal, completed before 1820 ran from just west of the Capitol (adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue) to the Eastern Branch of the Potomac. Light toning from dampstain, else fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
