Confederate Surgeon General Samuel P. Moore Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 9.75", on Confederate States of America, Surgeon General's Office letterhead, Richmond, December 22, 1862. Sent as a circular, Moore, as the surgeon general of the Confederate States, writes to order all medical purveyors to "furnish upon the requisitions of Medical Officers, for the use and preservation of Vaccine Virus, small plates of glass . . . also small pieces of Gutta percha, Gutta percha tissue, Tin foil, Beeswax and Whalebone." This particular copy was addressed to Confederate Surgeon R. K. Taylor. Docketed on the verso. Mounting remnants are evident on the verso causing wrinkling along the left and right margins. Two small cuts near the lower edge (1.25" and 3", respectively) not affecting the text. Small spot of staining at the upper fold.

Samuel Moore (1813-1889) was a career military officer, serving in the U.S. Army as a surgeon on the early frontier and the Mexican War (where he befriended future Confederate president, Jefferson Davis). He resigned his commission at the beginning of the Civil War and entered Confederate service as surgeon general. After the war, he resumed the life of a civilian doctor.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
