    Confederate Navy Commander Matthew F. Maury Autograph Letter Signed and Carte de Visite Signed. In this one page letter, written from the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., measuring 7.75" x 9.75" and dated January 9, 1860, Maury responds to a letter regarding a bill for $142.50 stating that Bond & Son should "refer to my letter of 30th of July 1858 concerning vouchers from officers who order work to be done." Unevenly toned with mounting remnant on the verso. With the letter is a studio portrait of Maury in civilian clothing, measuring 2.5" x 4", affixed to a mount with an ornate London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company backstamp. Maury has placed his signature below the image, dated 1965. An inscription appears on the verso in an unknown hand.

    Matthew Maury (1806-1873) was America's foremost oceanographer in the mid-nineteenth century. Serving as a commander in the U.S. Navy at the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and was commissioned into the Confederate States Navy as Chief of Sea Coast, River, and Harbor Defenses. He was instrumental in acquiring ships for the Confederacy and was a noted figure in the Confederate Navy. After the war, he returned to his native Virginia and taught at the Virginia Military Institute.
