    Description

Confederate Louis T. Wigfall Autograph Letter Signed with Carte de Visite. One page, 6.5" x 8", Washington, March 22, 1861. The future Confederate States Senator from Texas sends this hasty directive to "Col[onel]" one day before he withdrew as the U.S. Senator from Texas. The fire-eater ends this letter, "My opinion has undergone no change. We must prepare for war." Louis Wigfall was officially expelled from the U.S. Senate later in July for his boisterous advocacy of the Southern cause. He remained in Washington, however, to spy on Federal developments and procure weapons for Southern defense. The senator was later appointed brigadier general of the Texas Brigade. This letter is toned. Posing for the CDV (2.5" x 4"), Wigfall stands, top hat in one hand and cane in the other.
