    Description

Confederate Letter with content on the Civil War from Virginia. Four pages, 5" x 8", "North River, Hanover [Virginia]," December 30, 1862. H. R. Carter writes to "Honl. N. H. Coleman (of Louissanna [sic])" at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on a wide variety of war topics, including the Battle of Fredericksburg, slaves, family dislocation caused by the war, movements of "Yankees," General Joseph Johnston, Judah P. Benjamin, Jefferson Davis, the fall of New Orleans, Benjamin Butler ("the Beast"), Abraham Lincoln and the "bankruptcy of his Government," and more. With folds. The original transmittal envelope is included.

    More Information:

In part: "I sent them [family members] up there [central Virginia] about ten days ago, so that they might be out of the reach of the Yankees, in the event of this portion of Va's bearing again invasion. . . . I have also rented a farm there, to which I have sent the few negroes the Yankees have not stolen from me. I am here by myself, with two old negro men to feed my stock, a cook, a house servant & a miller. . . . I suppose both armies will now go into Winter Quarters, & next Spring we shall have active operations again. There has been a great want of brains in the South-West, the war would have been over by this time, if the Campaign had been as successful there as it has been in Va. . . . That miserable Jew, Benjamin, is the author of all of our disasters in the South-West. . . . I do not understand why Butler, the Beast, has not been killed by some one. Surely a man, who is willing to risk his life in battle, might be willing to risk it in ridding the world of such a monster. . . . Lincoln will lose the new levy of 600,000 then, besides the great opposition of the Democratic party, & of a portion of the Republicans, besides a general bankruptcy of his Government."
