Confederate General William Wirt Allen Autograph Letter Signed, With an Endorsement Signature by General Joseph Wheeler on the Verso. General Allen signs the letter, "Wm. W. Allen / Brig. Genl. Comdg." One ruled page, 5.5" x 9", "Headquarters Allen's Div., Kennedy's House," February 22, 1865. Hastily written in pencil, Allen reports on a large Union force near his front to Aide-de-Camp Lt. John G. Hudson just weeks before the Confederacy's surrender. Some staining and age-toning. The bold ink of the endorsement on the verso has bled-through.

General Allen's division was part of the Army of Tennessee during the final days of the war, participating in the Atlanta Campaign and fighting against William Sherman during his March to the Sea. In this letter, Allen passes on a report of "a heavy force of the enemy's Cavalry being on that road [Chester Road]." The general then calls for reinforcing maneuvers to counter the Union movements. The endorsement on the verso reads in part: "Reports heavy force in his front / Hdq Ca Corps / Respy from J. Wheeler." It is unclear to whom Wheeler is forwarding the message, but it is dated the same day that Allen wrote the letter. Allen's division surrendered on May 3 at Concord, New Carolina.
