Confederate General Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb Autograph Letter Signed "Tho. R.R. Cobb." One page, 7.5" x 9.75" (sight), Athens [Georgia], November 16, 1858. Addressed to Col. R. McMillan, in part: "I have examined carefully the demurrer of your Bill & I must say I never saw so lame & impotent an attempt at delay. I am surprised that Mr. Van Duger is willing to submit his own character to such an exposition." That same year, Cobb, a legal scholar and ardent defender of Southern slavery, drafted portions of the Georgia Code of 1861 as a member of the Georgia Code Commission. The document is carefully inset into a larger archival sheet for an overall size of 7.75" x 10". Paper loss which has obscured a portion of the text is repaired on the verso. Small spots of staining are seen along the right vertical fold.

General Thomas Cobb (1823-1862) served in the Confederate Congress before raising Cobb's Legion in late 1861 where he was commissioned a colonel in the Confederate Army. He was promoted to brigadier general just one month before receiving a wound to the thigh from a Union artillery shell during the Battle of Fredericksburg that caused him to bleed to death.
