Confederate General Stephen Dill Lee Endorsement Signed on the verso of a letter from John G. Cannon, a private in Rowan's Battery, requesting leave to care for his recently orphaned children. The letter (8" x 7.75") is written from Atlanta, Georgia and is dated August 13, 1864. Dill's signature appears on the verso disapproving the request. Also signed by John Brown Rowan, captain and namesake of Rowan's Battery. Rowan would be killed at the Battle of Nashville four months later.
Condition: Flattened folds with some wear and tiny separations occurring thereat; including a repair on verso. Some toning; bottom part of the letter has been trimmed, and side edges are a bit rough. The letter is a bit faded, but Lee's signature remains quite bold.
