    Description

Confederate General Patrick R. Cleburne Autograph Document Twice Signed. One page, 8.5" x 13", "County of Phillips [Arkansas]," February 20, 1858. Cleburne, a native of Ireland and a veteran of the British Army, immigrated to the United States sometime around 1849 where he practiced property law. Here, Cleburne has written an affidavit regarding a claim made against the estate of Patrick O'Kelly on behalf of Cornelius Daly "for the sum of 5403 93/100 Dollars." The first signature appears in the body of the affidavit, the second appearing at the end. Docketed on the verso. 1.5" curved tear from the upper edge. Minor separation at the edges of the folds.

Two years later, Cleburne (1828-1864) joined the Confederate Army and was the highest-ranking Irish military officer. Early in the war, he proposed that the Confederates enlist slaves. He planned the capture of the U.S. Arsenal in Little Rock, Arkansas, and participated in several major battles during the Civil War, including Shiloh, Perryville, Richmond (Kentucky), and Chickamauga. He was killed during a charge at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864.
