Confederate General Joseph B. Kershaw Clipped Endorsement Signed and Carte de Visite. Excised from a larger document to an overall size of 3.25" x 2.25", Gen. Kershaw signs his approval from the division's headquarters, dated April 11, 1863. Adhesive ghosting from the verso does not affect the signature, which is bold.

Accompanying the endorsement is a 2.5" x 4" vignetted neck up portrait of Kershaw, in uniform, his general's stars clearly visible on his collar. Affixed to an E. & H.T. Anthony mount. A pencil inscription on the verso identifies Kershaw. The image and mount show moderate staining, which does not detract.

Kershaw (1822-1894) took part in the Battles of First Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and Cold Harbor, amongst others. He was captured at the Battle of Sayler's Creek in April 1865 and was incarcerated at Fort Warren. After the war, he practiced law, was president of the South Carolina Senate, and served as postmaster of Camden.
