    Description

Confederate General Henry A. Wise Autograph Letter Signed and Two Stereoviews of Charleston's Mill's House Hotel. One page, 5" x 7.75", Charleston, September 20, 1863. Having arrived in Charleston the evening before, Gen. Wise, a former governor of Virginia, writes home to his wife regarding a meeting at the Mill's House Hotel with fellow general, Pierre G.T. Beauregard, who was in charge of Charleston's defenses, in part: "We got here at 10 last night. I had a good night's rest & find great elegance as well as comfort at the Mill's house. Genl. Beauregard eats here - I called on him this mg [morning] & have just returned from a long interview. He is pleasant & I am contented. We are about to ride out to select a camping ground between Charleston & the Stono [River]. I will write more fully this evg [evening] or tomorrow." Folds; discoloration of the lower left corner.

With the letter are two stereoviews of the Mill's House Hotel. The earlier of the two, circa 1862, is affixed to a Quinby & Co. mount measuring 7" x 3.25" and features an image of the hotel as seen from across the street. A history of the hotel appears on the verso. The later, also measuring 7" x 3.25" and dated 1865 is affixed to an E. & H.T. Anthony "War Views" mount, number 3114 in the series, and shows a similar image to the first with the exception of damage to the side of the building suffered during the shelling of the city by Union forces. Both photographs show very light foxing, else fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
