    Description

    Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith Letter Signed. One-page, 7.75" x 9.75". "Hd qrts Trans Miss Dept / Shreveport, La. June 1, 1863." A letter to Christopher Memminger, C.S.A. Secretary of the Treasury, concerning the appointment of a tax collector for the Trans-Mississippi Department. "I have the honor to suggest to you that it is highly important to the interest of this Gent, that the Tax Collector to be appointed by your Dept under the recent Tax bill, be installed in their duties in this Dept as soon as possible. If you should think proper to delegate to me the authority to make the appointment, I would act as promptly as practicable in the matter." Signed, "E. Kirby Smith" adding his rank.

    Condition: The letter has five horizontal folds and at one point was bound with other documents, as evidenced by the perforations along left margin that once held sewing. Foxing along right edge of letter. Verso has light soiling and some discoloration along one edge, affecting the docket, which remains very legible.


    More Information:

    Edmund Kirby Smith (1824-1893), born in St. Augustine Florida, served in the U.S. Army before he joined the Confederate army with the outbreak of the Civil War. He was one of only seven Confederate officers to attain the rank of full general. During his time as a Confederate general, he held the commands of the Third Corps of the Army of the Tennessee and of the Trans-Mississippi Department (primarily Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) headquartered at Shreveport, Louisiana, where he served at the time of this letter.

    Christopher Gustavus Memminger (1803-1888) was a German-born American from South Carolina who was one of the founders of the Confederate States of America, helping to write the Confederate constitution. He served as the Confederate government's first secretary of treasury under President Jefferson Davis.  He resigned his post of secretary on July 18, 1864.
