Confederate General Carter L. Stevenson Autograph Endorsement Signed on an official scribe copy of a letter from Robert Chilton to Robert E. Lee. Chilton's letter was dated August 26, 1861 and advises Lee that his orders to Colonel Agnus William McDonald were not fulfilled: "Col. McDonald had, previously to your orders to him, been directed to proceed with his Regiment to Hampshire County, to carry out his original instructions in that quarter, which were highly important etc. etc."

Stevenson's endorsement beneath reads: "Copy for Genl. Jackson. / Official / C.L. Stevenson A. Genl." McDonald was in commanded of the 7th Virginia Cavalry at this time, and was stationed around Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The 7th Virginia Cavalry was attached to General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's army in the Romney Expedition of 1861, which explains why Jackson was copied on this letter. A docket on the verso indicates that the communication was received on "Sep 2d."

The letter has two horizontal folds and the left edge is uneven, likely due to removal of the integral page. Slight discoloration due to age toning, and a few stray ink stains on verso.
