    Confederate General Benjamin F. Cheatham Signature with Carte de Visite. Two items, as follows: (1) A signature, "B F Cheatham" excised from the close of a document, 3.25" x 2.5". (2) A waist-up seated portrait in uniform with E. & H. T. Anthony backmark from a Brady negative and 2¢ tax stamp. Cheatham, from one of Tennessee's oldest and most prominent families, fought in the Mexican-American War finishing as a colonel of the 3rd Tennessee. He moved to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush but returned to his home state after three years. He joined the Confederate Army in 1861 as a brigadier general. His son, Benjamin Franklin Cheatham Jr., would serve as a major general in the U.S. Army, fighting in the Spanish-American and First World Wars. Both items fine or better.
