    Confederate General Alexander Peter Stewart Autograph Letter Signed "Alex. P. Stewart". 5" x 8". Two pages, January 15, 1889, Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Ben. W. Austin, Dallas, Texas. A bright letter, legible, with some old mounting holes not affecting the content, otherwise in fine condition.

    More Information: Former Lt. General Stewart thanks Mr. Austin for the Trinity Historical Society's bestowal of honorary membership in the society. He writes in part: "It is gratifying to me, as an old soldier/ of the Confederacy to know that/ while the cause for which we periled/ life & fortune is termed the "Lost Cause",/ yet our services are appreciated by/ the people - especially by the generous/ & noble youth - of the section to which/ we belong, for whose rights and/ preservation we fought." Included is an image of Stewart mounted to a printed backing. Alexander Peter Stewart was a West Point graduate who participated in several battles including Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign, Marietta, Ezra Church, Franklin, Nashville, and the Carolinas Campaigns. After the war he served as Chancellor of the University of Mississippi.
