    More Information:

Major-General Charles George Gordon, also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum, was a British army officer and administrator. The son of a major-general and a graduate of Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Gordon first saw action in the Crimea. He participated in the siege of Sevastopol and took part in the assault of Redan. In 1860 when the Second Opium War broke out in China Gordon volunteered to go.  He was present at the occupation of Peking and destruction of the Summer Palace. He remained with the British forces occupying northern China until April 1862. With the outbreak of the Taiping Rebellion, Gordon was ordered to Shanghai to aid the Imperial Chinese government in defeating the rebels. After his success, the Chinese Emperor promoted Gordon to the rank of titu one of the highest grades in the Chinese Army, and decorated him with the Yellow Jacket. Gordon then went to Africa where he made progress in fighting the slave trade. The Khedive of Egypt made him governor-general of the entire Sudan. European initiatives against the slave trade precipitated the rise of Mahdist forces in the Northern Sudan. Gordon organized the defense of Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. After a ten-month siege Khartoum fell and Gordon was beheaded, his severed head mounted on a pike.
