    Description

Charles D. Gilmore Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 5.25" x 8.25", Cedar Mountain [Virginia], September 17, 1863. Writing to a "Miss Paine," Lt. Colonel Charles Gilmore of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, Army of the Potomac, outlines the current situation with his regiment, in part: "We are now in line of battle, with our artilery [sic] in position, expecting to be engaged in a fight soon." The place on which they stand happens to be near the spot where "...General Pope commenced his fight [Battle of Cedar Mountain] Aug 29, 1862, that ended so disastriously [sic] to our army by his army being driven back to the Potomac, and on a field where General Pleasanton had a skirmish last Sunday."

He continues: "When I marched my regiment through Culpepper this morning, I ordered the band to play Yankee Doodle & Oh! how cross & sour the daughters of the 'F.F.V's' looked but the little colored folks showed their white teeth and seemed to be the only human beings that were glad to see us." Gilmore was promoted the following year to full colonel and was discharged from the army on May 29, 1865. Slight separation at the edges of the folds. Two small spots of staining.
