    Description

Charles Cornwallis Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.5", Calcutta, August 15, 1789, written during Cornwallis' service (from 1789-1792) leading British forces in the Third Anglo-Mysore War. Responding to Samuel Beachcroft, who was hoping to secure an appointment for his son. In part: "Sir, I have been favored with your letter of the 21st of February, and I can assure you that your son's good character, as well as my personal esteem for you, will incline me to show him every kindship in my power. I have not heard that Mr. Scott is likely to go home this year, but if that should be the case, I can make no promise for the Agency of the Luckipore Aurungs, which I believe are more difficult to manage than most in this country, and are of the greatest importance, as they are the only Aurungs of considerable magnitude for coarse cloths that do-not interfere with the British Manufacturers... your most obedient and Faithful Servant Cornwallis".

'Aurung' was a colloquial word for a place where goods are manufactured and/or a depot for such goods. The British at this time were occupying India and building a large commercial trade empire.

Condition: Lightly toned, usual mail folds. Mounting remnants on verso.

    Sir,

I have been favored with your letter of the 21st of February, and I can assure you that your son's good character, as well as my personal esteem for you, will incline me to show him every kindship in my power.

I have not heard that Mr. Scott is likely to go home this year, but if that should be the case, I can make no promise for the Agency of the Luckipore Aurungs, which I believe are more difficult to manage than most in this country, and are of the greatest importance, as they are the only Aurungs of considerable magnitude for coarse cloths that do-not interfere with the British Manufacturers.

Whenever therefore that agency shall become vacant, the probably capacity of the different candidates to execute so essential a hast, will be minutely and impartially considered, and I shall be happy if it should appear that Mr. Beachcroft has had sufficient experience, and acquired so competent a knowledge in that branch of the company's investment, as to authorize us to give him the preference.

If however I should not feel myself at liberty to propose Mr. Beachcroft for the succession at Luckipore, I shall hope to have an opportunity of recommending him soon to some other commercial residency that will be advantageous to him, and qualify him by degrees to fill the most important offices in that line of the service. I have the honor to be, with great esteem,

    Sir; your most obedient

    and Faithful Servant

     Cornwallis
