    Description

Charles Anderson Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages, 8" x 10", April 9, 1860, Salado Creek [Texas] to Nathaniel McLean, son of Supreme Court Justice John McLean, concerning Texas (climate, ranching, people, etc). Toned with folds. With transmittal envelope. Fine.

    More Information:

Charles Anderson (1814-1895) moved near San Antonio, Texas, in 1859, following years of public service in Ohio. He purchased a ranch and began selling horses to the U.S. military. A Unionist, Anderson fled back to Ohio after the Civil War began and served as a colonel in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Following the war, he served as governor of Ohio. Nathaniel McLean (1818-1905), the letter's recipient, was a lawyer and farmer from Cincinnati. During the Civil War, he also served as a colonel in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

On life in Texas, Anderson writes, "Sparse population, tendency to simplicity and crudeness of life, few schools and churches, little of what we call society, etc. etc. Indeed it is essentially a pastoral life in a warm, healthy, genial clime."

On his ranching business, Anderson writes, "As for the profits, I cannot say certainly, but I incline now to the opinion that they will be greater than I had supposed."
