Captain (Later Union Major General) Philip Kearny, Jr.: Rare Mexican-American Wartime Date Autograph Letter Signed "P. Kearny Jr. / Capt. 1st Drag. / Comd'g". One page, 6.25" x 8", "1st Drag. Cantonment", April 23, 1847, to Captain H. L. Scott, aide-de-camp to the commanding general. Kearny responds to a report titled "Neglect of the Sick of my Company". He writes, in full: "I am informed through Dr. Barnes that a report of the "Neglect of the Sick of my Company" has been made to the Surgeon General. As such a report did not originate with myself, and, as I know that no grounds exist for the same, and that if said neglect occurred through me, or had been passed over in silence by me, that I am the responsible person. I have the honor to request, with as little delay as practicable, to be furnished with a copy of the said report." Four months later Kearny (1815-1862) would have his arm amputated as a result of wounds he received leading the 1st Dragoons at the Battle of Churubusco. Winfield Scott referred to Kearny as "the bravest man I ever knew". Kearny was killed in action during the Civil War at the Battle of Chantilly. The letter has some trivial ink bleed, modest age toning, and a vertical fold crease, otherwise is in excellent condition.
