Captain J.T. Morrill, Three Autograph Letters Signed. Steamship captain Morrill writes three loving letters to his wife during his voyages at sea and at port in Veracruz, transporting American soldiers to that city as reinforcements to General Winfield Scott's occupying force. Dated October 13 and 20, 1847, and February 28, 1848, and written during Scott's campaign from Vera Cruz to Mexico City. Interesting human interest correspondence by an officer following the taking of Veracruz. Morrill tells his wife, "You cannot imagine how I long for the time to arrive when I shall leave this for a Christian Country. I am afraid that Mr. Meeker will not send the vessel home..." The final letter in this lot was written just as the peace treaty between the United States and Mexico was being signed. Each letter bears postal transit marks or cancellations on an integral address leaf. Letters are lightly age toned, and generally in fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
