General Gregory reports on the Battle of Five Forks
Brigadier General Edgar M. Gregory War-Dated Letters (2) as
Commander of the 2nd Brigade.A great war-date Union general's battle letter, 2 pages, 7.75" x 9.75". "Camp in the field, [near Five Forks, Virginia], April 1, 1865." Written as commander of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, concerning their epic triumph following the Battle of Five Forks. In part: "My precious daughter. I write to let you know I am safe by the mercy of God. We have had hard fighting today, took a battery, whipped the Rebels badly. It was a hard contest. 5th Corps only in the fight and Sheridan's Cavalry. It is a glorious victory. Our loss is not many. This [is] the 5th day fighting...I feel thankful to God for his mercy to me, to our army and our glorious cause...affectionately your father, E. M. Gregory." He continues on the verso: "My brigade has done well, suffered less than many but suffered considerable. The groans of the wounded are sounding in my ears while I write. Firing front of Petersburg very heavy now. I think things are favoring us...Griffin Commdg. Corps tonight Warren retired I am glad of it." Hurriedly written in pencil.
Together with a second letter written two days later. One page of a bifolium, 5" x 8"; "In the field, Hd. Qrs. in the saddle, [near Petersburg, Virginia], Mar/ 3, 1865 [but really April 3, 1865]". Another letter to his daughter describing the collapse of Lee's army following the battle of Five Forks. In part: "...I wrote the evening of the first...our Battle on the 1st was a good hard one. Our losses not heavy. Yesterday had but little loss, trifling. We have taken many prisoners probably up to this time 8 or 9000. The enemy are flying before us. Everything favorable. It seems to me the God of Heaven is with us...your father, E. M. Gregory."
Condition: Both letters are written in pencil. April 3, 1865 has flattened folds and scattered foxing at top. April 1 letter has a few clean tears that have been repaired with archival tape. Pencil writing on verso has smudged a bit, with soiling at folds.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
