    Benjamin F. Butler Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages, 8" x 9.75"; New York; September 17, 1855. The former Attorney General writes a letter to William Ogden, president of the Chicago, St. Paul and Fond du Lac Rail Road Company. Great content regarding the business of early railroads, including possible mergers and local statutes.

    Benjamin F. Butler (1795-1858) was a prominent attorney and political ally of Martin Van Buren. He served as Attorney General of the United States, as well as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He helped found New York University.

    Condition: Rough edges were the two sheets of what was originally a bifolium has been neatly separated along the central fold. Bold ink, with multiple emendations by Butler. Mounting remnants on verso of third page of letter.
