    Benjamin F. Butler [African-Americana]: Large Signed Commission for "Connecticut Colored Troops".
    Most unusual 13.25" x 16.75" printed and manuscript document. Head Quarters Department of Virginia and North Carolina, November 23, 1864, signed "Benj. F. Butler" as Major-General Commanding and Frank Sealy as Assistant Adjutant General. It appoints Frederick E. Camp of Durham, Connecticut as Major of the 29th Regiment of Connecticut Colored Troops. Oath of Allegiance printed on verso and completed by the Mustering Officer and enrollee. Butler was well-known for his use of freed slaves as "contraband of war" as well as their subsequent employment as armed soldiers in the Union cause. He even personally commissioned a service medal for colored troops, recognizing their achievement. The crucial exchange constituting the Freeport Question and Douglas' response
