    Benjamin Butler Document Signed and Autographed Letter Signed. The document is one page, 7.75" x 9.75", Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1854, with docketing on verso. The letter is three pages, 5" x 8", written by Butler to his brother Daniel. Both are toned and fine.

    More Information:

    The document, which authorized payment of $25.00 to "Geo. F. Lawtell", is signed "Benj. F. Butler Commanding Officer of the Fifth Regiment of Lt. Infantry." Butler was eventually promoted to brigadier general of the militia and during the Civil War, commanded the Union force that occupied New Orleans. After the war, he was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts and later served as governor of the state.
