    Description

Battle of Chapultepec: Two Mexican War Occupation Letters. Two letters, two pages, 8" x 10" and 8.5" x 12", "Chapultepec, Nov. 23th [sic], 1847," and "Mexico, Feb. 29, 1848." The November 1847 letter is written by Elijah P. Gillespie to his brother James. The other is addressed to "My dear sister", but the sender's signature is illegible. Gillespie's letter is moderately age toned with occasional dampstaining; professional strengthening of folds; very good. Unidentified letter is very fine.

On September 8, 1847, in the costly Battle of Molino del Rey, U.S. forces had managed to drive the Mexicans from their positions near the base of Chapultepec Castle site of the inner defenses of Mexico City. This left Chapultepec Castle with a small defensive army. General Winfield Scott began an artillery barrage against Chapultepec at dawn on September 12 and victoriously stormed the Castle the following day. These two letters were written by lonely soldiers to family back home in the States following the Battle of Chapultepec. Both mention military matters but focus primarily on family issues.
