Asa Mitchell Autograph Petition Signed. Two and a quarter pages, 7.25" x 12.25", "Washington County [Texas]," May 27, 1847. Addressed to Judge Robert E.B. Baylor, co-founder of Baylor University, Mitchell writes that he has "been sued on a draft drawn by Nathan Mitchell [his son] in favour of Alex.r Russell for $450 dated Austin June 2d 1841 which draft has long since been paid to the certain knowledge of your petitioner." Mitchell has signed five times throughout. Folds are weakened and separating in places at the edges. Repair of the main horizontal fold on page two is done with tape. Light ink bleed-through.

Asa Mitchell (1795-1865) was one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, arriving in Texas with his family in 1822. He settled at the mouth of the Brazos River and opened a salt refinery. An early proponent of independence for Texas, he took part in the Battle of Velasco in 1832. He moved further inland and settled at Washington-on-the-Brazos, the town which he represented as a delegate to the Consultation in 1835. He joined the revolution and served under the command of General Sam Houston as a sergeant in Co. "B," First Regiment of Volunteers, taking part in the Battle of San Jacinto. After the war, he moved to Bexar County and, during the Civil War, led the San Antonio Vigilance Committee.
