Armstrong Family Collection of Naval Letters. Consisting of nearly twenty letters dating from 1822 through 1887, most letters of William M. Armstrong of Norfolk, Virginia, and his son, James Armstrong. Many of the letters are official U.S. Navy correspondence, but personal letters from James to his father contain the most interesting accounts of the young midshipman's earliest voyages during the early 1840s. For example, James' first letter to his father renders an account of his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and includes his observations on the ship's food, oceanic sights, bouts of seasickness, and being quarantined at Madeira during an outbreak of the measles (ca. 1841).

Included are two letters signed by Secretary of the Navy Isaac Toucey ordering Captain William Armstrong to "hold yourself in readiness for the command of the U.S. Steamer San Jacinto [April 1859]" and authorizing the "advance of three months pay to the officers of the U.S.S. San Jacinto [June 1859]." Also included are four receipts for a house purchased by the elder Armstrong in Norfolk in 1838. After nearly fifty-seven years of service in the U.S. Navy, Captain William M. Armstrong died in 1861. James Armstrong was appointed an acting midshipman in September 1841. He died in 1854.
