    Description

Anthony Wayne Autograph Labor Contract Signed. Four pages, 8.75" x 13.25" (width varies), "Waynesborough Farm [Pennsylvania]," March 13, 1786, promising "to pay Mr. Henry Fox the sum of Twenty five pounds specie for superintending the aforesaid business until November next." The contract contains "General directions & instructions for conducting the Waynesborough farm for the year 1786" and includes: caring for the horses and cattle; repair of the fences "round the Wheat field...to keep the hogs & Cattle out"; shoveling out the barn; attending to the water; plowing, planting, removing stones from fields; etc. On the last page is a sketch of a farm, probably Waynesborough. Weakened folds separating in places with minimal paper loss, but not affecting the text. Waterstaining in places and uneven toning on the folds.

Following the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne relocated to Georgia from his native Pennsylvania, where he had received a tract of land in exchange for his military service during the war. He would serve in both the Georgia legislature and the U. S. Congress as a Representative for the State of Georgia before being recalled to military duty by President George Washington in 1792. During his absence, he would hire others to run his Pennsylvania farm.
