    Description

Alfred B. Street Autograph Manuscript Signed "Alfred B. Street." A small poem titled "Our Union" written by Alfred B. Street, one page, 5" x 8", Albany, New York, February 28, 1865. It reads, "Our Union! The lightning of battle First Kindled the flame of its shrine; The blood and the tears of our people Have made it forever divine. In battle we then defend it! Will fight till the triumph is won; Till the states form the realm of the Union As the Sky forms the realm of the sun."

Street was the state librarian of New York and penned several poems and short stories in his lifetime. A book of his poems called, "The Burning of Schenectady and Other Poems" was published in 1842.

This lot features this charming little handwritten poem as well as a complete typed transcription. The poem itself is in Fine condition with adhesive stains on the verso. At one time it was glued into an album and the glue has stained the paper dark brown in two places. There is writing in pencil on the lower half of the page from modern cataloguing. Otherwise perfect. Onward! From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
