Alexander "Sandie" Pendleton Autograph Letter Signed. Six pages of bifolia, 5" x 8", HdQ... 2nd Corps; March 8, 1864. Addressed to his sister Lella, he writes about troop movements, his wife Kate, and his father's transfer to Johnston's army. It reads in part: "Your letter, long welcome, came safely while the raid was going on, and on my return form a tramp in the 'Wilderness' in search of Kilpatrick I found it here awaiting my arrival...We were of course somewhat excited at the movements of the Yankee cavalry which rode so boldly up & knocked audaciously at the door of our National Capital, but were from the first in great hopes of catching them. I went as a guide & director in some sort with Gen. Johnson; having an intimate acquaintance with that county, just in the midst of which the battle of Chancellorsville was fought...But our efforts were unavailing, & so after a couple of days of fruitless marching & fasting I came back gladly to camp...A letter from Ma...brought me the news, not very pleasant you know, that Pa was ordered to Johnston's army...I suppose Gen Johnston knowing his peculiar fitness for duty has asked for him to come out & organize thoroughly the Artillery of his army..." Signed, "A. S. Pendleton."

Confederate Captain Sandie Pendleton (1840-1864) was the son of Confederate General William N. Pendleton and an aide-de-camp to General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Following Jackson's death Pendleton served on the staffs of Gens. Richard S. Ewell, during the Gettysburg Campaign, and Jubal A. Early, who made him chief of staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Pendleton was wounded in the abdomen on September 22, 1864, during the Battle of Fisher's Hill. He died the following day.

Condition: Mail folds, with light uneven staining and toning. A few notations have been made in blue ink.
