    Albert Sidney Johnston Document Signed as Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas. One page, 7.75" x 5.5"; Department of War; June 3, 1839. A document authorizing back pay: "This certificate entitles Wm Keiser to the difference between pay of sergeant and first sergeant from the date of the last payment made to him to the first day of October 1837 - as he served during the time specified in Capt Harry's Co. I, 1st Regt Pm nt Volunteers. [signed] A. Sidney Johnston Secy of War."

    On December 22, 1838, Albert Sidney Johnston was appointed Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas by President Mirabeau B. Lamar, a post he resigned in February 1840 when he returned to Kentucky. In December 1839 he led an expedition against the Cherokee in East Texas. He returned to Texas during the Mexican War, and was made Colonel of the 1st Texas Rifle Volunteers and served with W. O. Butler as Inspector General at Monterrey, Mexico. He remained an officer in the US Army, but resigned when Texas seceded from the Union at the outbreak of the Civil War. He accepted a commission from President Davis and was placed in command of the western front. On April 6, 1862, the first day of the Battle of Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing, General Albert Sidney Johnston was killed while leading an advance against a Union position.

    Condition: Bold ink, with a few areas of ink blossom. A tiny separation occurring along right margin at fold is reinforced with archival tissue. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 15.75" x 16.5".
