    Description

Abner Doubleday Autograph Letter Signed "A. Doubleday". One and one-half pages, 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., January 25, 1864, to Lieutenant Benjamin T. Marten, aide-de-camp in the New York 47th Infantry. This letter was one of many (others are not included in this lot) written between Doubleday, a career army officer, and Marten concerning a legal question Doubleday had asked the lieutenant: "If an estate falling due to heirs in this country about the year 1820 who have not been notified of the same or whether there is still a chance for the heirs to obtain it." Apparently, Marten had previously given Doubleday the name of a helpful attorney to contact ("I will write a full account and send to Mr. Ballard as soon as I get the leisure").

Concerning military matters (Doubleday was a Union major general), Doubleday writes, "So far as I am concerned I have not the slightest objection to your wearing any straps you like, but suppose from any cause you were asked your name and rank and obliged to give it. If the straps did not agree you might be dismissed the service for they act very hastily here." Doubleday continues by volunteering to "see Senator Wilson and endeavor to do something in relation the rank of A.D.C. . . . If you go west I have no objection to stating that you are my senior A.D.C. and entitled to the rank of major by virtue of that office although it has not yet been given you." Marten was discharged three months later. Toned paper with small separation along central horizontal fold; fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
