    A. P. Hill Autograph Envelope Unsigned. 5.5" x 2.75" (sight), postmarked September 11 [1863] from Old Point Comfort, Virginia. Less than two months after participating in the Battle of Gettysburg, the revered Confederate lieutenant general addressed this envelope to "Col. R[ichard]. C. Morgan / Columbus / Ohio." The letter was censored by Lt. George S. Lester, aide-de-camp to Gen. John S. Mason, who has written vertically in the left margin of the envelope, "Lt. Geo. S. Lester / A.D.C." In the lower left corner is written, "By flag of truce." In the upper right corner is an 1861 3¢ Washington rose stamp with grid cancellation. The original letter enclosed in the envelope was an A. P. Hill ALS from the headquarters of the 3rd Corps dated August 31, 1863. General Hill did not live to see the end of the war; seven days before General Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House, a Union corporal shot and killed Hill as he rode to the front near Petersburg. This envelope exhibits soiling and browning; framed with an image of General Hill for an overall size of 15" x 28".
