[War of 1812] Society of Cincinnati Manuscript Address "To the President of the United States". One page, 7.75" x 13", [n.d., but likely July 4, 1812]. A period fair copy of an "Address of the Officers of the late American Army and Navy assembled in the Society of Cincinnati of the State of New York."

In part: "Convened to celebrate the anniversary of American Independence, our attention is naturally drawn to the interesting circumstances which characterize the present situation of our country. Threatened as it is by a very powerful foreign nation we cannot but view the situation as critical; and in a time of imminent public danger, our late profession of soldiers seems to render the expression of our sentiments peculiarly proper... That invasion from abroad, from whatever quarter, is to be repelled by united and vigorous exertion... We pledge ourselves to stand ready to seal our sincerity with our blood."

After years of tension, Congress formally declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. The address we offer was likely written in patriotic response to this call for war, and delivered at a July 4 celebration two weeks later. This fair copy originates from the papers of Henry Burbeck, for more information about General Burbeck, see lot XXXXX in this auction.

Light age toning and horizontal creases from folding, near fine. Docketed on the verso: "Address from the Soc of Cincinati [sic] of N. York to the President" in Burbeck's hand.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
