    [Union Major General Joseph Hooker] War-Date Circular Endorsed by Union Major General Darius Couch and Signed Carte de Visite of Captain Joseph W. Dickinson, Hookers Assistant Adjutant General. Includes: (1) CDV of Captain J. W. Dickinson, posed standing in uniform with a Gardner, Washington D. C. studio mark on the verso, approximately 2.5" x 4", signed on the margin below the image. A contemporary pencil caption on the verso reads "Rollicking Dick". Fine condition. Dickinson was Hooker's assistant adjutant general and later saw service in the 21st Colored Infantry Regiment. (2) Manuscript circular, two pages (half sheet), Fredericksburg, December 15, 1862, from Major General Joseph Hooker, endorsed by Major General Darius Couch and Captain J. W. Dickinson. Couch's own copy of the Hooker's circular concerning the defense of the city of Fredericksburg, Virginia while the army withdrew from the city. It read, in part: "Maj. Genl. Couch is assigned the charge of the defense of Fredericksburg from Hanover St. East and Brig. Genl. Butterfield from Hanover St. to the Rappanock on the west...Genls Couch and Butterfield are also requested to have all the streets of the city kept open for rapid communication and also the bridges connecting the city with the opposite shore." The paper is modestly age toned, else it is a legible and important document concerning the Union defeat at Fredericksburg.
