    [Ulysses S. Grant]. Lorenzo Thomas Signed Copy of General Orders No. 42. Four integral pages, 4.75" x 7.25", Washington, July 7, 1843. Issued by General Winfield Scott, the orders announce the promotion of then-cadet Ulysses S. Grant to 2nd lieutenant by brevet in the U.S. 4th Infantry. Thomas, who later served as secretary of war under President Andrew Johnson, has signed on page four. Binding holes along the main vertical fold. Binding remnants on the last page.
