[Texas Revolution]. Mathew Caldwell Document Signed. Two pages of one leaf. 8" x 6.5", Gonzales [Texas], November 28, 1835. Written just months after the Battle of Gonzales, this pay order is addressed "To The Provincial Government of Texas San Felipe" for $35 for "domestics to make bagging" for the Texas Volunteer Army near Bexar. Age-toned paper strengthened with rice paper in some places, included along a fold. Some soiling. The order ("No. 2") reads in full:

"Three days after Sight please pay to the order of Alfred R. Guild the Sum of thirty five dollars for domestics to make bagging for the use of the Texas Volunteer Army before Bexar. [Signed] Mathew Caldwell SubContractor."

Two endorsements appear on the reverse. The first states that this order was examined and "admitted to audit" (signed by auditor John W. Moody). The second from San Felipe de Austin states that Alfred R. Guild came before Moody and he "owes the government nothing" (signed by Moody on January 23, 1836). Also docketed on the back stating that Alfred R. Guild had filed this order on January 23, 1836, and that this order had been examined. Matthew Caldwell (1798-1842) served as captain of the Gonzales-Seguin Rangers and subcontractor in the Texas Volunteer Army. Later, he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.
