[Texas Rangers]. Major John B. Jones Autograph Letter Signed to Ranger Lieutenant Pat Dolan, commander of Company "F." Two and one-half pages, 7.75" x 9.75", "Headquarters Front[ier] Batt[alion] Austin Tex.," September 26, 1876. In this letter, Major Jones, the commander of the Texas Ranger Frontier Battalion, encourages Lt. Dolan to improve his communication with headquarters: "No Muster Rolls of your company have been received here yet. If you have not done so make them out at once, with descriptive list of men and apprraisment of horses. Retain one copy yourself, forward one to the Headquarters at this place and one to the Adjutant General. . . . Report to me at this place by letter on receipt of this. I have heard nothing from you, not even of your arrival at your place of destination." Better communication, Jones writes, will give other Rangers "the advantage of any information you man obtain of Indians or lawless white men."

Jones also tells Dolan about the formation of the new Ranger Company "C" and advises the lieutenant on provisioning his company for the winter. "I am raising another company, to be commanded by Capt. John C. Sparks, designated Co. 'C', which will for the present be stationed near Burnett and will operate in Burnett, Llano, Mason, Lampasus, Hamilton, Bell, Williamson &c, I shall leave here for that region in two or three days, and will return to this place in the course of ten or fifteen days and then come on out to Uvalde. . . . Make the best arrangement you can for corn. I will pay cash for it when I come out and then arrange for your winters supply. Would like for you to have some hay put up also. Say ten or twelve tons."

Major Jones, who commanded the Frontier Battalion from May 1874 through January 1879, had only recently, on September 1, given command of Company "F" to Lt. Dolan, which likely explained Dolan's tardy communications. Captain Sparks began his command of the newly formed Company "C" five days after Jones wrote this letter. Minor soiling on lined paper. Minor tears starting along some smoothed folds. Two filing holes in top margins.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
