    Description

[Texas Rangers]. Lieutenant G. W. Campbell "Officer's Return" Signed "G. W. Campbell," adding his rank and battalion. Two pages, 7.75" x 12.5", n. p. [Texas], September 14, 1877. In response to an order by Shackelford County Judge W. H. Ledbetter (which is found on the verso) to "bring before me the body of . . . John Cook at the Court House in the town of Albany [Texas]," Texas Ranger Lt. George Campbell, Company "B," Frontier Battalion, sent this reply, stating in part: "It is not true that I have, or have had in my custody any person by the name of John Cook, but now have . . . in my custody one John Beard . . . I detain John Beard by virtue of my Commission as Lieut. in the Frontier Battalion of Texas State Troops and for the reason that the said Beard is accused of the crime of murder in Williamson County and of various offenses in other Counties of this State." Countersigned on the verso by Judge W. H. Ledbetter. Light, even toning throughout. Light smudging of ink along the middle, horizontal fold, though the text is wholly legible.
