    Texas Ranger Captain Gillett letter telling of the death of "annother one of my old GH boys..."

    [Texas Rangers]. James B. Gillett Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages, 8" x 10", October 27, 1900, Alpine, Texas, to Hay J. Bowles of Uvalde, Texas. Here the famed Texas Ranger writes to a friend, offering his condolences over the loss of Bowles' daughter, and mentions the death of friend Jim Davenport. In part: "I see from the papers that Jim Davenport was killed at Cotulla on the 25th Inst. This is annother one of my old GH boys gone. I can afford to even drop a tear for him. While I always thought the killing of old man Hereford was wrong yet know body knows what a man sometimes suffers in silence. Maybe Jim thought he was write. Though that was the starting of making him a bad and dangerous man, Peace be to his ashes. He can do no one any harm. Well I must close this rather poorly expressed letter. Again asshuring you of my heart felt simpathy. I am truly yours, J.B. Gillett"

    Condition: Evenly toned, with smoothed folds, and moderate staining. The top edges are lightly chipped, and each page has a 3" tear at the lower left that has been repaired.
