[Stonewall Jackson]. Alexander Swift "Sandie" Pendleton Autograph Letter Signed "A.S. Pendleton." Three pages of a bifolium, "Camp at Centreville"; October 30, 1861. In a letter to his mother, Pendleton writes about serving under General Thomas J. Jackson. It reads in part: "...The General showed me a letter from Mr. Bledsoe written by order of the Secretary of War to ask if he intended to retain me on his Staff as in that case I would get the commission. He asked me to act as Chief of Ordnance of the Army of the Valley, and I accepted, and he wrote to Richmond on Saturday that he wished to retain me; so that I presume the commission will be here ere many days elapse. I don't grumble however as I am drawing four dollars a day as a clerk to the General. I am in hopes that the day of my incarceration is almost over as Col. Preston is here to enter upon his duties as Adjutant General...Gen. Lee went away this morning to Abbeville on leave for seven days. He has a bad cold & a sort of intermittent attack nothing serious however and will I think be back by the end of the 7 days. There is no prospect of a fight shortly...I presume that with General Jackson I shall be in the Valley before long. If so I anticipate a pleasant time, when our Head Quarters are in Winchester..."

Confederate Captain Sandie Pendleton (1840-1864) was the son of Confederate General William N. Pendleton and an aide-de-camp to General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Following Jackson's death Pendleton served on the staffs of Gens. Richard S. Ewell, during the Gettysburg Campaign, and Jubal A. Early, who made him chief of staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Pendleton was wounded in the abdomen on September 22, 1864, during the Battle of Fisher's Hill. He died the following day.

Condition: Mail folds, with light uneven staining and toning. A few notations and emendations have been made in blue ink.
