    [States Rights Gist]. 1st South Carolina Infantry: 2nd Lieutenant Charles Cresswell Military Commission, Special Orders, and Envelope by order of States Rights Gist. One partly-printed leaf, 14.25" x 9", South Carolina, January 6, 1862, appointing Charles M. Cresswell "as 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of S.C. Infantry Provl. Forces of Confederate States." Signed in the far left margin by Governor Francis Pickens and Deputy Secretary of State William R. Huntt. Below the signatures reads, "By Order / S. R. Gist / Adj. Insp. Genl of S.C." With a large South Carolina vignette along the top. Very clean.

    The Special Orders No. 28 (one blue leaf, Sullivan's Island, July 17, 1864) appoints Lieut. Charles Cresswell of the 1st South Carolina Infantry to Ordnance Officer on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Very clean, save for an ink blotch. Also included is a legal-size yellow envelope addressed to "For. Lieut. Cresswell / Columbia, S.C." Printed in the top right corner, "State of South Carolina / Head Quarters." Bearing expected soiling.
