    [Revolutionary War] Two Importation Documents Signed by Benjamin Lincoln and Thomas Melvill. Both documents are one page, 10" x 5.5", District of Massachusetts, Port of Boston and Charleston. Light toning; fine.

    More Information:

    Signed by Lincoln (the Revolutionary officer who accepted Cornwallis' sword of surrender at Yorktown) and Melvill (the grandfather of author Herman Melville and last surviving member of the Boston Tea Party). Lincoln was the collector at the Port of Boston and Charleston and Melvill was the inspector.

    (1) April 8, 1806, certifying the arrival of "one flagshead of rum numbered and marked as per margin, containing One hundred fourteen gallons fourth Proof" from Jamaica aboard the Enterprise Newhall.

    (2) July 31, 1807, certifying the arrival "from Bordeaux one Case of Claret" aboard the Betsy Brown. This document is mounted to a red board (12.5" x 10") that includes two typed brief biographies of Melvill and Lincoln.
