[Mier Expedition] William Mosby Eastland Document Signed "Wm M. Eastland". Two pages, 8.5" x 12", May 30, 1840, Fayette County, Texas. This Republic of Texas deed bond was signed by Eastland as surety in Fayette County, where he was elected land commissioner in 1840. Eastland moved to Texas from Kentucky in 1834. He fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836; one year later he became a commander of the Texas Rangers where he attempted to instill strict discipline. His attempts backfired, but his graceful concession won the respect of the Rangers. On December 26, 1842, Eastland and other Texans were taken captive following the Battle of Mier. After marching the Texas captives into the interior of Mexico, the Mexican government decided that one in ten of the captives - those who drew a black bean from a jar - would be executed. Eastland was the only officer, and supposedly the first soldier, to draw a black bean and was shot on March 25, 1843. This document, which has some separation at the folds, has been awkwardly repaired along the margins and weak folds with tape. Though fragile, it contains the bold signature of an early Texas hero. Near good.
