    Description

[Mexican War]. Two Thomas Griffin Letters, commenting on his affection for his new environment in "Texas & Mexico" and the military. The first letter is four pages of one bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", "Camp at the mouth of the Rio Grande," July 22, 1847. Postmarked on the address panel, "Brazos July 26" and "10." Thomas Griffin writes in part, "Here I am at the mouth of the celebrated Rio Grande, on the disputed territory & within three hundred yards off the acknowledged Mexican line. Our Division of the army arrived here yesterday afternoon. I consider yesterday one of the greatest days of my life, worth the labor of one year at least. It was then I saw for the first time the territory of Texas & Mexico." Griffin also describes his rough sea voyage from New Orleans. Two holes created when the original seal was broken. Some minor fold separation. Soiled and stained.

The second letter is three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10.5", Pueblo, Mexico, January 30 [n.y.]. Postmarked on the address panel "Vera Cruz Mexo." Griffin writes about mail delivery: "I received yours of the 17th of December about two weeks ago, by a small escort of dragoons. . . . I don't know when we will have a mail down to Vera Cruz, probably not for a week or so." Some soiling and staining.
