    The first American killed in the Mexican War.

    [Mexican War]. Truman Cross Letter Signed "T Cross", with a second franking signature. One page with integral address cover, 8" x 9.75"; Quarter Master General's Office, Washington, D.C.; June 27, 1831. Addressed to Lt. G. H. Crossman, Assistant Quarter Master: "Sir: Your letter dated the 3rd instant, covering a summary statement for May last, and a muster roll of one man employed on extra duty for a part of the same month, has been received at this office."

    Col. Trueman Cross was a veteran of the War of 1812 and served in the Mexican War as Quarter Master General under General Taylor. He was killed on the northern side of the Rio Grande on April 10, 1846 and is considered the first American casualty of the Mexican War. Cross had been out on horseback and never returned to camp. His fellow soldiers organized a search party, which resulted in multiple skirmishes with Mexican forces, eventually escalating into war.

    Condition: Usual mail folds, minor soiling on verso along folds. Small amount of paper loss along left vertical edge where seal was broken.
