[Mexican War]. Truman Cross Letter Signed "T Cross", with a second franking signature. One page with integral address cover, 8" x 9.75"; Quarter Master General's Office, Washington, D.C.; June 27, 1831. Addressed to Lt. G. H. Col. Trueman Cross was a veteran of the War of 1812 and served in the Mexican War as Quarter Master General under General Taylor. He was killed on the northern side of the Rio Grande on April 10, 1846 and is considered the first American casualty of the Mexican War. Cross had been out on horseback and never returned to camp. His fellow soldiers organized a search party, which resulted in multiple skirmishes with Mexican forces, eventually escalating into war.
