[Mexican War]. Three Letters to David Hofins of Bedford, Pennsylvania. In the first letter, John P. Langdon of "Co. B. 4th Arty. USA" writes to Hofins from Monclova, Mexico, on November 8, 1846, reporting that his regiment is 200 mile north of General Zachary Taylor's force at Monterey and eighty miles west of the Rio Grande. He also includes rumors of the possible taking of Chihuahua with no loss of me.In the second letter, Ben Frank Mann writes from "Island of Lobos, Mexico" on February 23, 1847, about the American plans to land General Winfield Scott's army near Veracruz to begin the city's siege, which began later on March 9 and lasted until March 29. Postmarked from New Orleans, the letter reads in part: "As the Government intends to use it [Lobos] as a depot during the war on account of the excellent anchorage which it affords, the safest I believe on the Gulf. . . . The two regts. from Penn, the South Carolina Regt, the Regts from Louisiana, Mississippi and New York are here, on the Island, there are a number of Regulars on the vessels in the harbor . . . there are upwards of thirty vessels in the Harbor. . . . Gen Scott arrived here yesterday, and we are to embark during this week, on Friday it is supposed at the latest. Our destination is Green Island six miles below Vera Cruz where we will be landed and weather permitting. . . . As soon as it [Veracruz] is captured we will be placed on the route to the Capitol."
In the final letter from St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans, on April 29, 1847, Lt. E. C. Marin, much taken with the pleasures of life in New Orleans, writes Hofins about the city and traveling via steamboat down the Mississippi River: "The comforts and luxuries of traveling on the Mississippi must surpass every other mode of traveling in the world . . . have plenty of company both male and female, music and dancing, flirtation and so forth. . . . New Orleans, the Paris of America with the melting eyes of its 'brunettes' and the soft delicacy of its 'blondes' with all their fiery passions, for enjoyment, are enough to make man, like Adam of old, pluck from the forbidden tree." All exhibit some soiling and staining and bear folds.
