[Mexican War] - The Capture of Veracruz. Autograph Letter Signed by Army Engineer B. Louis Bowen, two and a half pages, 4to. (7.5" x 10"), "Vera Cruz Mexico", March 29, [1847], writing to his mother in Massachusetts. Fabulous content, written immediately after the surrender of Veracruz, in part: "... at 10 o'clock this morning the stars and stripes were raised on the city and [Perote] castle amid the roar of hundreds of cannon and the music... Our troops were drawn up in a line from the gate of Safety and the whole Mexican force under General [Juan] Morales marched out in a corresponding line, stacked their arms in number about 5,000 and marched toward the interior. We landed on the 10th... From the second day after we Landed till the 22d our company and the Engineer Officers were at work Day & Night in looking [for] positions for Batteries and often we went within 300 yards of the city crawling on our knees and cutting the paths with our knifes for fear we would be heard... on the afternoon of the 22 of March we opened three 10 inch mortar batteries of 3 mortars each and before 10 at night they had streamed 600 shells into the city. In a day or 2 after, we had two 6 gun batteries, 4 man mortars and 6 small handmortars of brass - on the 26th a white flag appeared and we stopped firing. The next day a council was holden and the conditions of surrender agreed on..." With attached address cover bearing a New Orleans cancellation dated April 11, and a black "10" postmark. Small tear with paper loss where wax seal has been removed, usual mail folds, and a few light stains not affecting legibility of script; overall condition is very good to near fine. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
