    Description

[Mexican War]. Soldier's Letter with One Engraving of Zachary Taylor. The letter (three and one-quarter pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10") was dated December 13, 1846, from Saltillo, Mexico, and addressed to "Rev. Dr. Vinton" of Boston (the author is unnamed). Writing about Mexican and American movements, the anonymous soldier reports that "Santa Anna remains at San Luis Potosi (it is said) 32,000 men; and we are here, 200 miles from him and barely 1,000!! Yet he comes not to attack us. He may be inclined for peace. . . . Gen Taylor is about taking possession of Victoria. A portion of our forces already occupy Tampico. Gen Wool is at Parras and we at the salient point in this long line, which now forms the boundary, if armed occupation be the policy. It is obvious that by this dispersion of our forces, we are in danger of being cut up in detail." He continues his letter by writing about the "besotted ignorance & superstition of a people bound up in the Romish religion. Saint Mary of Guadalupe is the patroness of all Mexico, and I have never entered a house since I have been in this country without seeing a picture of this idolized object." Minor separation along one fold; one small hole at the central vertical fold. Only slight soiling. Also included is one engraving of Zachary Taylor "at the period of his command in Mexico." Some foxing

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
